I had a friend back in high school named R.B. She was a wonderfully talented girl, full of hopes
and dreams she only shared with me when no one else was around. She was shy, but her heart
was big. Her father was absent, and her mother was short-tempered and punitive. Time passed, and we grew up.

One day, while I was waiting for the bus, a beautiful woman with curly red hair and green eyes
approached. As I looked closer, I suddenly realized; it was R.B. We talked for a while, and she opened up about her struggle with low self-worth and self- confidence. I invited her to my office, and she accepted. She came in quietly, almost apologetically; the way someone walks in after years of feeling “not enough.” Her shoulders rounded, her voice soft, and almost every sentence began with: “I’m not sure I can…”

She sat a bit farther away from me, afraid that if she opened up too much, I might judge her. R.B. told me she wanted to grow, but doubt held her back. She avoided opportunities, questioned every decision, and felt undeserving of the dreams she secretly held.
So in our work together, we went to the root: her relationship with herself and the stories she inherited from her parents.
Session by session, we uncovered the old narratives she had accepted as truth; stories that told her she wasn’t capable, smart, or worthy. She had carried these beliefs for so long that letting them go felt almost impossible. But then, something beautiful began to happen. As she learned to question those thoughts… as she challenged them… as she spoke to herself with the kindness she had never been given… her confidence began to rise.

She started taking small steps: applying for things she had always avoided, expressing her opinions, allowing herself to be seen. Each tiny act of courage strengthened her sense of worth.

And one day, she said something I’ll never forget: “Maybe I am enough. Maybe I always was.” From that moment on, she moved through life differently; not louder, not perfect, but grounded in her own value. Helping her rediscover her worth reminded me of something powerful: When a person learns to believe in themselves, their whole world expands.
